Ethylene Glycol and Methanol Poisonings
- Ethylene glycol and methanol poisonings are medical emergencies. Both substances are commonly found around the home in automotive products such as antifreeze and windshield washer fluid. 2
- Significant numbers of toxic exposures to ethylene glycol and methanol continue to occur each year, often with fatal consequences. 1
- Left untreated, ethylene glycol and methanol poisoning leads to the accumulation of toxic metabolites produced by the action of alcohol dehydrogenase. Ultimately, this can result in metabolic acidosis, renal injury and death. 3
- Early recognition and treatment of asymptomatic patients is generally associated with complete recovery from ethylene glycol or methanol poisonings. 3
In the event of a real or suspected ethylene glycol or methanol poisoning, contact a regional poison control center for current treatment recommendations and possible consultation with a medical toxicologist (Toll free: 1-800-222-1222).
